Claire-Anne O’Brien is a textile designer and lecturer living and working in London. Specialising in constructed textiles she creates sculptural, 3 dimensional knitted fabrics for interiors. Traditional textile techniques such as weave, knotting and basketry inspire playful investigations into structure and form using the unique properties of knit.

Originally from Co. Cork, Ireland, Claire-Anne O’Brien graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2006 with a degree in Textiles. She then went on to complete an MA in Constructed Textiles at The Royal College of Art in 2010. She is now a lecturer in Constructed Textiles at Bath Spa University.

Claire Anne is best known for her structural approach to knit and her passion for texture and surface pattern. This collaboration with Ceadogán, brought together through the Liminal exhibition by Irish Design 2015,  allowed both designer and maker to explore new ways of working. For Claire Anne the challenge was in how to animate and bring her design aesthetic to a two-dimensional surface. This was achieved through the use of varying pile heights to create a relief pattern on the surface of the rugs.

Téadra (meaning cords or ropes), is a hand-tufted rug made with 100% undyed, felted wool in 18mm cut pile and 8mm loop pile. Also available in other colourways.
